How Green Is My City?
By: David Biello
Notes:
- The creation of the state-of-the-art eco-city called Dongtan on China's Chongming Island was supposed to be built.
-Planned Eco-city were successful but it effect their overall energy and emissions that would be minimal causing vast majority of urbanizes that exist in cities.
-Cities are now greener than suburbs.
-Urbanites use less energy and emit less CO per household than suburban counterparts because they live in closer quarters and use public transportation.
-A key priority for cities adapting to a world transformed by global warming is increasing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to stave off even more catastrophic climate change
-Demand for resources will oustrip supply as number of people inhabiting cities swells from more than three billion to more than six billion by 2050.
-Ensuring that sustainable supplies of freshwater continue flowing to growing urban populations is another daunting task facing the international community.
-Poor waste management is not just a problem for water quality.
-The key priority for cities adapting to a world transformed by global warming is increasing energy efficiency.
-To help cities conserve, C40( a planning group for 59 major cities engaged in efforts to combat climate change) developed a list of best practices based on case studies of strategies.
-Boosting ability to provide clean energy, transportation, food, water and waste disposal will be key strategies to ensuring a brighter future for mankind
Summary:
We can improve the way we live in cities to keep a sustainable life on Earth. Our usual basis now can not sustain our earth. They figured out that we should improve our transportation which could help with our CO2 problem in the atmosphere.. Electric cars may help as well and buses that run on compressed natural gas can help clean the air as well as improving efficiency. Sustaining a city will help it thrive and grow for years but they must limit their water usage as well as energy. They need a better way to manage their waste because it affects their water quality.
Reflection:
I think it is so surprising that cities try to be greener than suburbs. I also think that the cities should try their best to be more sustainable. If cities used their resources with more sustainability the city will thrive much longer. I believe we can start little as growing more trees to green roofs will impact the cities in the long run. Using less cars and more public transportation, or even biking to work will help the environment out a lot.
