Title: Three New Slow Loris Species Discovered in Borneo; Rare Venomous Primates Threatened by Illegal Pet Trade
By: John R. Platt
Summary:
The slow Loris is the only venomous primate that is in the illegal trading market. Scientists have found that there is four different types of slow Loris. Scientists states that they did not know much about the Loris because they are nocturnal creatures therefore they did not examine them as much. Rachael Munds state, "Historically, many species went unrecognized as they were falsely lumped together as one species.." They never knew there was more types of Loris. She also says that fours types of species is harder to protect than one from the illegal market. The Loris bite may be toxic but they are easy to catch in the wild. In the Indonesian market for 20$. They stuff these animals in small cages and rip put there front teeth and venomous patches on their elbows. They do not last long after someone buys them because they can not eat their food properly and the humans play with them during the day which ruins their sleep schedule because they are nocturnal animals.
Reflection:
I highly abhor what the illegal markets are doing to these slow Loris. They capture them from the wild or get them from destruction of their habitat. "The pet trade is a serious threat for slow lorises in Indonesia, and recognition of these new species raises issues regarding where to release confiscated Bornean slow lorises, as recognition by non-experts can be difficult," stated by Nekaris. The Loris are treated badly being kept in small cages, they use pliers, nail clippers, and wire cutters to take out their front teeth and venomous elbow patches. We need to try our best to help these animals because people around the world is treating them inhumanely.
