Saving the Honeybee
By Diana Cox- Foxter and Dennis vanEngelsdorp
Notes:
- People make a living moving honeybees like Dave Hackenberg whom trucks beehives from field to field to pollinate crops.
- Worldwide millions of beehives are emptied
- Honeybees are slowly disappearing putting many crops at risk because they need pollination,
- Hackenberg colonies started to die in the spring,
- Many of Hakenberg's colonies had lost large amounts of workers; only the queen and younger workers were healthy.
- Farms like Mono culture requires pollination activity for short periods of the year.
- Scientists discovered the dying bees as CCD; colony collapse disorder.
- Bees that suffer from CCD is sometimes infested with multiple pathogens.
- People start being alarmed when bees are dying because 1/3 of world agriculture depends on the European Honeybee.
- How to save the bees from CCD? It isn't easy and requires taking better care of the environment.
- IVAP= Israeli acute paralysis virus, or IAPV.
- Scientists are trying to find ways to protect against IVAP.
- Researchers found that 2/3 strains of IAPV infects bees.
Summary:
Bees are slowly declining due to CCD or colony collapse disorder which is a phenomenon in which loses largest amounts in their population/colonies. The bees are sick with many different type of diseases. Researchers provides us their hypothesis of poor nutrition and exposure to pesticides that causes CCD but we don't know if it's correct. We not help these bees survive because if we don't many of our crops will die.
Reflection:
I found the article to be very interesting because I have never heard of CCD or colony collapse disorder before. I know that bees are very important so if they slowly disappear that is not a good situation. Bees pollinates our crops to make them grow. Scientists and Researchers have not found out how and why CCD happens but they predict it is from poor nutrition and exposure to pesticides. I think we should do more to help these bees because they help more than 100 of our crops!
