Title: Which Species Will Live? By: Michelle Nijhuis
Notes:
-The experts gather into conference rooms to determine which species is the most important in our ecosystem, culturally, and economically.
-As the budget declines the environmental stress grows.
-Many politicians and regulators favor in helping the economy over helping our own planet.
- Scientists soon start to acknowledged triage
-A decision making system that is use by battlefield medics is a a conversation triage based on medical triage.
-Medical triage has many variations but all of it involve sorting the patients for treatment in difficult situations when supplies and time are short.
- Passed in 1973, The Endangered Species Act passed in 1973; considered the most powerful environmental related law in the world. - The Endangered Species Act provides protection for all nonpast species. -In 1980, trouble started to happen when endangered species listings of northern spotted owls and salmon threatened the economic interest of powerful fishing and timber industry.
-The protected areas had to police because of the climate change is shifting specie ranges.
- Climate change makes population expanded and other global pressure on the biodiversity continued.
-The Conservationists is worried about taking responsibility for final and difficult decisions.
Summary: Scientist and Experts gather to find species that is most important to the environment, economically, and culturally. However, it was difficult because Politicians and regulators cared only for the economy and not the environment. Scientist soon discovered the need for triage which is a decision making system in which treatment in difficult situations when supplies and time are short. The Endangered Species Act passed in 1973 protects all nonpest species and considered the most powerful environmental law in the world. There are several ways to make triage decisions; Evolution first is when it emphasized the protection on genetic diversity while function first is where it focus on specific ecological roles.
Reflection: Traige is still happening today, it shows me people still care about the environment. I also learned that many species in this ecosystems is an very important part of our planet. I believe we have to inform more people about these species that need our help because I didn't even know that losing species was very bad for the ecosystem until I took this class and read about the Articles. I also think that we should limit constructions to conserve the environment around us. I think all the species that needs to be saved should be saved not just one.
